Welcome to Just Ask Just Girl, our official advice column!
We ask our followers on Instagram and Twitter to DM us questions that we can answer anonymously here, so that anyone who is struggling with these problems can see them too.
Question: "Okay, so basically I need help shaving the downstairs. I have no idea what I'm doing!"
We totally understand, this is such a struggle! We are not medical professionals, but we are women who have some experience we can share with you!
Before we start, it is important to note that you absolutely do not need to remove your hair down there (or anywhere else for that matter.) Everything is completely normal, and anyone who makes you feel insecure about that is not a good friend. That being said, removing the hair is totally a choice you can make too! Lots of people do and lots of people do not. You can remove hair from just the sides, all of it, some of it, anything you want and are comfortable with. Everything is fine. ☺️
First, shave when you are in the shower or bath, and make it the last thing you do. This gives the area/skin time to get wet, which will make the hair easier to remove.
Second, if the hair is too long, it will be difficult to remove. If it is longer than an inch long, use scissors to trim it before hand.
Third, USE. SHAVING. CREAM. Or hair conditioner. But absolutely do not forget to put some sort of barrier between the razor and your skin. If you don't, you could end up with some painful razor burn!
Fourth, shave with the growth. Shaving in the direction of the hair will greatly decrease the likelihood of ingrown hairs and razor burn. This means shaving in a downward direction. Make sure to pull the skin tight with your hand, and shave carefully. Rinse out the razor after each stroke.
Lastly, make sure to exfoliate and moisturize afterward. Using a loofa on the pubic area (not inside your body, just the outside. You do not need to use any soaps in between folds or inside holes. This is very important.) and then an unscented lotion afterward. If you accidentally knick yourself and are bleeding a bit, don't panic. grab some toilet paper and dab it on, and wait for the bleeding to stop. Do not apply lotion if you are bleeding! It will sting!
We hope this helps, thank you so much for trusting us with this! Remember that body hair is normal and you are not required to remove it, but if you feel more comfortable that way, more power to you. Your body, your choice!
